Weight loss & diet help

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

While most people start their diet before summer gets here, I’ve always been a bit different.  I’m starting my diet at the end of summer.  Well, perhaps I did start a diet early in the year, but that one obviously didn’t work.  So I’m beginning a new weight loss attempt now.  One that will work.  One that will make me able to wear skinny jeans and skinny sweaters all winter long instead of sweatpants and baggy sweatshirts.

I’ve never used Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig.  I’ve never bought expensive diet pills, mainly because… well, they’re expensive.  I also never seem to lose any weight.  Perhaps there’s a connection there.  Maybe it’s time that I find something to help me with my weight loss.

There are different diet web sites that offer articles, advice, and product reviews at no charge to the user.  One such diet site has loads of information that is up-to-date and relevant to the user.  It has exercise programs, a free newsletter, and information on losing twenty pounds in four weeks without special diets.  Sounds like a perfect choice for assistance in losing weight and becoming a healthier person.

To me, the newsletters are important.  I check my email daily (okay, hourly).  If I have something sitting there reminding me to exercise, offering me a diet tip, or any other tidbit of information that is relevant right then and there, I’ll be more likely to find success in my diet.

Wish me luck as I make this attempt for a successful path to a healthier me.

Healthy Living

Monday, October 12th, 2009

So, i began a new “healthy living” attempt.  This isn’t the first time, that’s for sure.  But i’m hopeful, somehow, that this time it’ll work.  A friend of mine told me about SparkPeople, so i joined.  I’m actually tracking the food i eat and the number of glasses of water that i drink.  It’s funny how you don’t realize all you eat until you write it down.  And now i’m real careful about eating that dessert or the extra helping of mashed potatoes.

I joined with my friend, and she was surprised that i was tracking my meals.  “I’m starting next week,” she said.  My husband was also shocked.  “Why don’t you at least wait until Monday… get a fresh start on the week.”  And i thought… why not now?

I’m so tired of putting off what needs to be done in the hopes of getting the timing right.  It needs to be done now and i’m doing it now.

Sticking with it… that’s a whole different blog.  ;)

Runaway Train to OLD

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

I’ve reached that age.  I realize for some that age arrives sooner than it does for others.  And I’m truly not surprised that it has reached me at this point in my life.

I’m getting gray hairs.  Not so many that I’d consider dying it.  I only do that for a change of pace.  And I’m usually unhappy with the result.  But I’ve got 2 or 3 or 27 gray hairs.  They aren’t the soft silver strands that some people are blessed (yes, blessed) with.  Mine are loud and wiry – rising above the other hairs like a hard-of-hearing old guy at the movie theater.

“Eh??” they shout.

“Shh!” I persistently tell them.  “Will you *sit* down!?” I plead.  My other hairs don’t seem to mind – or even notice.  They just lie there softly and calmly in a pile of brown.

So now, the question is:  To pluck or not to pluck?

I heard a scary rumor back in my gray-free days, that if you pluck gray hair, you’ll accelerate the growth of new gray hair.  That just can’t be true.  It harkens to old wives’ tales such as:

  • Swimming after eating is BAD.   (I’ve heard everything from “you’ll get a cramp” to “you’ll drown.”  Which is really bad.)
  • Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your eyesight.
  • Swallowed chewing gum stays in your belly for seven years.  (I used to swallow gum on purpose, thinking it was great exercise for my belly.  It didn’t work, by the way.)

So I did some research.  According to http://regrow-hair.org/dont-pull-out-gray-hair/, you should not pluck.  It could damage the hair follicle.  The site explains that plucking does not increase the rate that your hair turns gray.  One hair per follicle, and the surrounding hair is not swayed to turn by one hair’s unnatural demise by tweezers.

And http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/44/32.cfm suggests that you wear a hat outside, because, theory is, the sun makes your pigments work overtime.  Just like your skin tans, the pigments in your hair may “work too hard and burn out early,” resulting in gray hair.  But, there’s no concrete evidence for this… soooo… makes me wonder if this is just a future old wives’ tale.

They did offer this interesting fact:  “The average white woman starts developing gray hair at age 34, while the typical black woman gets about a ten-year reprieve.” Heehee… at least I beat the average!  Yea me!

Mothernature.com does confirm that once a hair follicle produces a white hair, that’s it.  There’s no turning back.  The process has begun and cannot be stopped.  I’m on a runaway train to OLD.  Oh well, might as well grab on and enjoy the ride.
